This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! While most of the churches I have been part of have never highlighted this holiday on the Christian calender, it is rapidly becoming one of my favorite!
To know know more about the story of Pentecost, you have to read Acts 2. Actually you have to read through more to understand the effects of the events that led up to that Sunday including the arrest, crucifixion, resurrection, Great Commission, and ascension of Christ to get the foundation. Then you have to dive into the rest of Acts and the history, present and future of the church age to understand the after effects but for today, I’ll just keep with the actual day of Pentecost.
Long story short, Jesus gave His followers the charge to preach the gospel but not until they received the gift of the Holy Spirit. They went back to the upper room for prayer and waited. After several days of this, the Holy Spirit came busting in and they were baptised in the Spirit! From there, we see immediate after effects of speaking in other tongues, preaching, droves of people getting saved, power against persecution, and much more.
This Sunday, we will be celebrating the memory of this event and focusing on the continued current power of the Holy Spirit! I look forward to being with my friends, focused on the Word, in prayer, and worshiping for this great gift of the Holy Spirit. I just don’t get missing this kind of celebration and proclamation within the church.
Happy Pentecost! Come celebrate with us at The Shepherd’s Fellowship!
