Free Book by Brian Tome

One topic I am passionate about is freedom in Christ through a relationship with him so I was eager to get my hands on this book by an author with a similar passion. The reason the books stood out to me when I first saw it is not its bright orange cover (though that helped) but the bold statements on the front cover from Mr. Tome that promised intensity in this area. He was going to address the bondage of law living that puts so many under man’s thumb and show the joy of a relationship with Christ. Did he accomplish this goal? In many ways yes but he violated the one thing that drives me as nuts as bondage, he didn’t keep a balance in his conversation.

Astrology has been around a long time. A lot longer than seeing them in newspapers, in little books by the cash register, or it had its own web-site. However, the recent trend of seeing it more and more on Facebook got me to thinking about it again and wanted to work it through some on a blog. It won’t be my smoothest writing, just some ramblings.

I know for many, astrology is no more than a little fun. No more threatening than reading your fortune cookie. I get that. For those, they are probably turned off they hear some preacher type trashing on it and getting bent out of shape about every little thing.

At the same time, to many others, astrology is a belief system. Lent 2010

Lent is an important time to many of us at The Shepherd’s Fellowship. While we are non-denominational, we have adopted this ancient church tradition as part of our own practice.

Lent is the period of time from Ash Wednesday (2/17/10) until Easter (4/4/10). It is a period of 40 days (minus Sundays) and is a period of fasting as we symbolically share in Christ’s time of fasting in the desert before his temptation. It is a preparation time as we get ready for the celebration of Holy Week. OK, there’s a lot of church talk in there, so let me better explain the process of the practice.

Thou Shalt Not…

I was watching some church TV when I was flipping through channels last week and I happened across a preacher talking on the command “Thous Shalt Not Steal”. It was pretty interesting as he focused on different ways we steel from others besides the normal… I took  a candy bar from a grocery store when I was 12. He talked about how some steal when they spend time with someone else’s spouse in an inappropriate way. He talked about how we can steal from God but not giving of our tithes or time. We can steal from others their joy or fulfillment when we trash or dump on others.

But one that stood out to me because I see it so often is when he talked about when we steal from work. Not pens and other office supplies though that would apply but when we steal time and money from our employer by being on Facebook, taking long lunch and sneaking back in, or maybe even reading this blog when you are on the clock. We can justify it so easily but it is theft none the less.
