“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.” Romans 14: 1

Paul gets to talking about disputable matters. These are not the things that are black and white in the Bible, but things they are somewhat grey. In Paul’s day, this could be what type of food you eat, days being considered holy or not, or others. In our own day, there are “disputable matters” as well like can I drink one beer, where we stand on politics, and the like.

There is much packed into Romans 14 and I highly encourage you to dig into it on these matters (especially on how we seek our position on such matters by the Spirit’s leading instead of our own personal wants and desires). When I was reading it this morning the above verse stood out to me matched with the verse below.

“So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. ” Romans 14: 22-23

“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” Romans 15: 1-2

Snob: noun \ˈsnäb\- One who seeks association with those regarded as social superiors; tends to rebuff, avoid or ignore those regard as social inferiors

Let’s be honest, no one likes being around a snob in action accept other snobs. The continuation of clicks, popularity games, and separation should be rooted out as children so we aren’t adult aged children. We should not be alienating others due to financial, educational, work position, physical appearance, shared interest, life goals, or feeling like you have succeeded in a tougher life than others.

Paul says the same is true in the spiritual. Don’t look down on others because they have failures due to being weaker in the faith then you. That’s step one. Then, don’t get hyped up on yourself because you are the bomb because you are not looking down on others (not to please yourself). Accept one another as we encourage and spur one another on. Do good for your neighbor and lift them up. “But who is my neighbor?” The person beside you that you are comfortable with as much as the person beside you that you don’t fell you naturally click with.

Don’t be a spiritual snob…..

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15: 5-6

When we sin against God…. it is not “Oops, I made a mistake”. It’s “I grieved the Holy Spirit, I crucified Christ, and I sinned against God.”

When we do that same old sin again, it’s not “Well, God understands that I need this to blow off some steam”. God understands that that one thing is more important to you than Him.

Sin leads to confession which leads to repentance which leads to grace which leads to freedom….. There is no short cuts….

When we fall int a season of sin, it’s not “Well, Satan almost won but God had the victory in the end.” That language ignores your part.

It’s “Yes, Satan tempted me but I am the one who choose to follow. I sinned for a season but thank God that once I humbled myself, He lifted me back up through His mercy and grace.”

He turns our ashes into beauty! That’s most amazing when we acknowledge the ashes as well as the beauty.
