There was a website that I stop by from time to time called www.extremetheology.com. As I went through some recent posts, I found one by Chris Rosebrough that I took note of and was encouraged by called “with gentleness and respect”. To understand why it spoke to me, you need to know a little more.

Saddleback church, led by Rick Warren, recently had a Purpose Driven Life conference as they have had before. This time, Chris was invited (from my understanding) all expenses paid because their website have had some concerns with Rick and his ministry.  There have been many allegations about Rick (from multiple sources) including that he preaches a watered down gospel, that he preaches a false gospel, and all the way up to he’s a false prophet using the Purpose Driven Church model to invade and destroy the church.

“To me, the church should not aim to be ‘real’ as an end. The church is there to proclaim truth. Trying to be hip and cool and real does a disservice to the church. We’re not called to be successful. We’re called to be obedient, even if they don’t come…. If somebody doesn’t find you objectionable, I wonder if you’re preaching the full counsel of God.”

It was a couple summers back and I had gone to visit the church Solomon’s Porch in Minneapolis. I was excited to go because I had seen a special on TV about some churches that had been reaching the post modern community in unique ways and their church was one of the ones highlighted. I clicked with the things their pastor and church folks were saying about community and their church. Also I was on a quest to find other like minded Christians in ministry that our little old church could associate with. After emailing back and forth with Doug Paggit, the church pastor, I was thankful to be well received and welcomed to spend a week with them. To add to the great timing, their church was hosting the Emergent Summer Institute. I had heard of Emergent, knew that Doug was one of the main voices of the “association” and wanted to know if I would find a home there.

Not too long ago, I was listening to the radio in my car and a commercial for a local car dealership came on and it made me think of how some churches talk and act.
