For those who have been around awhile, you have been subjected to my endless ramblings on the Emergent community, emerging church, conservative church and the like. Not just on this site, but in other on-line communities I am involved in. My on-going conversation about the dangerous teachings of the leading voices of Emergent and the concern of the non-loving bashing way that ultra conservatives can act that fuel the flame sometimes.

However, I have come across a book that nails the topic better than any of my feeble attempts called “Why We’re Not Emergent (By two Guys Who Should Be). This book is a great introduction into the conversation that is a must read on any list.

The only thing I would prefer in the book that the introduction promised I would not find is the lack of addressing the difference of Emergent the group and the concept of emerging churches. I still see a very distinct difference between the two while also conceding that there are sweeping similarities. I was afraid the book would throw all emerging churches under the bus as I have seen done before.

My fears were quickly dismissed as I continued to read the book. I agree that trying to address that minor point would be too difficult to dance around instead of focusing on the real topics at hand. The book is a true balance of truth and love with a little fun mixed in to boot.

I know many of you have two or three books going at a given time so I don’t mean to add on. However, my suggestion is this, unless that book is the Bible, put it down for another day and dive into this. Great book!

Recently someone told me the saying “God is the Santa Clause for adults.” In the conversation I was in and at that moment, I felt lead more to listen than talk so I didn’t respond to the statement. However, I thought the statement itself (especially since I have heard it before) would be a good starting point for a response.

With that, let’s start with the implications of the statement….

Part of the following is a comment I left in a response to my good friend C’s blog after reading a blog on his site (http://undoingthedamagemrcswildride.blogspot.com/). I will quote those parts……

C had put a letter up from a well know emerging pastor concerning challenges within the church. That for too long the church as a whole has not been the best representation of the Christ of the Scriptures. That hypocrisy, lack of love, seclusion, judgment and the like have invaded the church and hurt individuals who came to be loved. All of this is sadly, true.

Here are my fears within the two extremes that I sit between as an Emerging Conservative.

Last night I was talking to a dear friend of mine and we got to talking about spirituality and the church. It brought up an old concept I had spent some time on a few years back that I call the “Jedi Error”.

It was a couple summers back and I had gone to visit the church Solomon’s Porch in Minneapolis. I was excited to go because I had seen a special on TV about some churches that had been reaching the post modern community in unique ways and their church was one of the ones highlighted. I clicked with the things their pastor and church folks were saying about community and their church. Also I was on a quest to find other like minded Christians in ministry that our little old church could associate with. After emailing back and forth with Doug Paggit, the church pastor, I was thankful to be well received and welcomed to spend a week with them. To add to the great timing, their church was hosting the Emergent Summer Institute. I had heard of Emergent, knew that Doug was one of the main voices of the “association” and wanted to know if I would find a home there.

Here’s a retro blog of mine that got some upset with me. Homosexuality is a tough topic sometimes in the Christian community but a conversation that must be had. If you disagree with me on of these points, first take a breather, pray it through and see if it is you emotions or the Holy Spirit talking to you. That being said, I am more than happy to talk with you more no matter what your thoughts are on the topic.
