Over the next two months, we will be covering important studies to prepare us for the Summer of Service! These will include things like Calling, Being Passionate, Being Equipped, Collaborative (working together and with others) and much more.

This podcast, however, we will be taking a peek ahead as we explore why we are on this track in the first place. This study will be diving into God’s heart for service, the example of service, and the life changing passion that we are called to!

Warning:  Here comes some random babbling……

Our last elder meeting, I brought Romans 12: 1-8 to our study time for us to dig into. Unlike many who really prepare something to share…. a lot of times, I come across something that I want to experience with the others more than present so I didn’t put a lot of pre-thought into it. I just brought it, we read it, and then started to dig in.

I found I was really captivated by this Scripture in this moment and with this group of leaders in our church. There were some simple truths that I wanted to explore more and I have been thinking about and praying over these verses for two weeks. This blog is an attempt to get some of this down in a purposed manner.
Here’s part of the Scripture…

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to hisfaith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12: 6-8

Today is Memorial Day and I am thankful for the men and women who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms and rights that I enjoy today. There are no words or expressions I can give that will fully convey the gratitude you deserve for what they have given. Thank you so much…….

I will suggest to anyone reading this what I suggested to my church family yesterday. I suggest a simple action we can all do that will carry Memorial Day through out the year.

It comes from an experience I had at Bob Evans a month or so ago. My family was eating and I noticed an older couple sitting a table or two away from us. They both seemed tired and a little weary from life as they quietly enjoyed a meal together. I noticed the man was wearing a baseball cap that only one who has served our country or one who sacrificed a love one to a war had a right to wear. It identified him being connected to the Vietnam War.

When they got up to leave, I asked him if he served in Vietnam and he nodded yes. I told him we appreciated his service and sacrifice. His face started to beam. His wife was full of pride. And he simply said “You’re welcome”.

When you see someone with one of these hats, a shirt, or a tattoo that hints of their service, take the risk and ask. More than likely, they served or a family member that they lost did. When they identify who gave of themselves for you, thank them. They deserve it.

Happy Memorial Day……. Blessings!

I will get back to my normal blogging after this week but for now I want to give you a mission trip update.

The combined youth groups hit the road yesterday morning to head to a local nursing home. They helped with bingo and went room to room visiting with senior citizens who normally don’t have many guests. I was happy to hear one of our 11 year old say to me last night that visiting with a couple older ladies was one of the favorite things she has ever done. She shared her story with me about their challenges and how much they enjoyed the kids coming to visit.
