I just finished a book called “The Almost True Story of Ryan Fisher” by Rob Stennett. I picked it up off a review of a fellow blogger.
Here’s a quick review….
I have to say I would recommend it but not climb a moutain to scream to the masses “GET THIS BOOK!”. To be honest, I expected a little more from the premise of this book.
Ryan Fisher is a real estate salesman who starts to pretend he is a Christian to sale homes to Christians as a prime market waiting to be tapped. Over a series of events, he takes the concept of everyone being a minister a little too far and makes a startling decision. Though he has no training, no accountability, and worse yet, does not even believe in God, He decides to start and pastor his own church.
You are invited on his and his wife’s journey as they go from a handful of folks to thousands of dedicated followers. While some Christians might believe this concept to be far fetched, I don’t. I found the concept and possible sceniroes raised in the book to be not only eeirly possible, but some aspects are in the church already today.
This author took on a topic in a balanced yet pointed way and over well, he did it well. A ghost writer may have helped a little in the writing style. then it again, it could just be I brought a preconceived notion to what I thought the book would be versus what it was which never works anyways.
If you have 4 books on your night stand, I wouldn’t put them to the side for this one. However, if you’re fresh out and looking for something interesting to pass some time…I would recommend.
You can get the book here.
I agree that I also place emerging/emergent separate. I also agree that the Pagitt/McLaren stream is more of a flare up, the version put together by Mark Driscoll and others of his persuasion are definitely going to get bigger and bigger, which I am okay with.
